“If you want to tell people the truth …”

Just in case you need a refresher:

It continues here. Meanwhile, the Onion sums it up nicely:

“Climate change is real, and we are killing our planet more every day,” said climatologist Helen Marcus, who has made similar statements in interviews in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. “We need to make a serious effort to stop it, or, you know, we’ll all die. There really isn’t much else to say.”

For 2011, I am going to try to implement Oscar Wilde’s advice:

“If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they’ll kill you.”

  2. Yup. And children in England will never again know what snow looks like and sea’s shall rise and corn ethanol and mercury light bulbs and windmills will save us… blah blah freakin blah.

go back in your hole. moron.

  3. It’s telling how the level of comments from the denialist camp went from questioning the data and science to questioning the integrity of scientists to shrieks of fury and “la la la I can’t hear you”. The majority of it, but not all, since rehashing the old talking points that have been repeatedly refuted for years remains popular amongst the most boneheaded.

  4. Scientists aren’t very good at politics. It’s because science is the search for truth and politics is its obfuscation.

We’ve lost this fight. Even if we changed everyone’s mind tomorrow, it’d be another fight to do anything about it and we have no real idea what to do or if we could do it.

Our best minds need to stop worrying about what everyone thinks, and start worrying about how to mitigate the damage. We’re committed to it. The fight is pointless. If we start now, maybe we can allow Spocker Shocker the unfathomable privilege of continuing to think that he is right.

  5. I have given up on the science deniers. They simply will not understand. It 100% willful ignorance. Citations from Newsmax or Drudge or AEI or wherever their fevered minds take them cannot be debunked because they KNOW you are a lying dupe of the green conspiracy or something. It’s too late anyway. The feedback loops are on full now. It will only get worse.
